French operator chooses SONU 5 to optimize its network's return path capacity

MECHELEN - 17 February 2004 - A leading French cable operator has selected M-TEC BROADBAND for the
supply of various SONU 5, scalable optical node, and UPL 8000, Universal Platform, equipment.

To maintain and expand the high-quality delivery of various interactive multimedia services, the need for further
segmentation became urgent during the third quarter of 2003. Due to the limited availability of fiber lines,
standard solutions did not meet the operator's needs.

After evaluating various solutions and discussing the current versus the preferred situation in depth with the
operator, M-TEC BROADBAND integrated the CWDM solution in the existing SONU 5.

Combined with the UPL 8000 in the head-end, this link provides a high level of operational flexibility :

. Creation of a high performance optical link using only 1 fiber
. thanks to the implementation of the CWDM technique in the SONU 5 field unit

. Various upgrade possibilities towards the near future
. since both the SONU 5 and the UPL 8000 are designed from a modular point of view
. meanwhile optimizing the space usage with the introduction of the 3U high UPL 8000
. and the small, yet robust and weather-proof SONU 5 housing

. Compatibility with the existing network infrastructure

. Monitoring & management capabilities

To maximize the success of the project rollout, M-TEC BROADBAND offered local support and training in
co-operation with JP2, its authorized French partner, while minimizing the delivery time.

"M-TEC BROADBAND succeeded creating a flexible and creative solution which fits perfectly in the
operator's network philosophy. Added up with the growing demand for interactive added value services, we
believe this innovative solution offers an interesting case study for many other operators." concludes Rudi
Meylemans, Sales & Marketing Manager.

Today M-TEC BROADBAND has already delivered more than 87 SONU 5 units and 29 UPL 8000 racks
to maximize the upstream bandwidth of the French cable network.
